Water

Please attend the meetings of the Waiulaula Watershed Advisory Group. Meetings are usually held on a Tuesday at 6 pm at a location to be determined. For information and to confirm that a meeting will be held, call Carolyn Stewart at 885-6354. Here are some handouts about watershed issues:

Possible Issues

Our community may decide that the plan should address the following issues:

The 1993 North Hawaii Plan noted that nine privately-owned wastewater treatment plants were planned to accommodate planned development projects, with one being provided for the Parker Ranch Waimea Town Center project (which has already been constructed and is located west of the airport) and another for the DHHL Lalamilo project. The cost of each plant is estimated to be $5 million to $10 million, with the cost of all nine systems combined exceeding $100 million. To what level will these systems treat wastewater and where will the treated wastewater be discharged?
The 2003 Study of the Groundwater Conditions in North and South Kona and South Kohala Districts noted that fierce competition for groundwater resources has occurred in our study area. How much development can our water resources support? Are new sources of supply needed?

What do current plans say?

Current plans indicate that meeting water quantity demands and maintaining water quality are concerns in our study area:
