Lindsey Road Bridge Replacement Project

Jacks Currently Support Lindsey Road Bridge

North Side of Lindsey Road Bridge

South Side of Lindsey Road Bridge

Introduction

Hawaii County has determined that the Lindsey Road bridge across Waikoloa Stream adjacent to the Lindsey Road intersection is structurally unsound. Jacks have been placed under the bridge so that it can support heavy truck traffic. The jacks are held in place by friction (they are not bolted to the bridge structure) and would probably wash away during a high-intensity storm event. If the bridge were to collapse or be washed out, traffic moving from Kawaihae or North Kohala east though Waimea would have to detour through Waikoloa to reach Hilo and vise versa.

The County has agreed to add the Lindsey Bridge Replacement Project to the County Capital Improvement Program. If the project is deemed to have a high priority, it could be constructed within three years. If not, considerable delay in construction of the project could occur.

The County Department of Public Works can be reached at the following link:

Current Issues

The following issues have been mentioned:

Should construction of the Lindsey Road Bridge occur after the Mamalahoa Hwy-Kawaihae Rd Connector Project is constructed, or before?
How can the Waimea Trails and Greenways Project trail (which is planned to intersect Kawaihae Road at this location) be accommodated when the Lindsey Road Bridge is replaced?

Communications
